Leeds United have formally abandoned their bid for Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Nadiem Amiri after failed negotiations with the Germany international.

The Championship club now consider their interest in Amiri dead following face-to-face talks with Amiri and his representatives in England yesterday.

Leeds flew Amiri in from Germany in the aftermath of their 4-3 win at Ipswich Town and had hoped to advance the deal towards a medical having already agreed a £5million fee with Leverkusen.

Amiri met with manager Daniel Farke and spent time at both Thorp Arch and Elland Road, with United under the impression that those discussions had been positive.

Leeds, though, were frustrated by additional financial demands made subsequently by Amiri’s camp and failed to strike an agreement that would have allowed Amiri to begin medical tests.

The 26-year-old, whose wife is expecting a baby shortly, is believed to have been in two minds about a switch to the Championship, despite indicating serious interest in it after the approach from Leeds last week.

Attempts to progress the transfer ahead of United’s clash at Ipswich were complicated by a delay in Amiri reaching an agreement over the terms of his exit from Leverkusen but his willingness to come to England in person raised confidence that he would accept Leeds’ terms.

But he returned to Germany yesterday evening on a plane which United, having funded the incoming flight, were not willing to finance. He was photographed in the centre of Leeds as he waited to arrange travel home.

The board at Elland Road have been frustrated by reports in Germany that Amiri was put off by the city itself, insisting negotiations had already run into trouble before the midfielder was pictured there.

Amiri could now remain with Leverkusen beyond the end of the window having seen a prior option of a switch to Marseille fade.
