According to Luke Bryan, Lady Antebellum, who is now trying to go by the name, “Lady A,” is going through a “mess” right now regarding their legal battle involving the singer of the same name.
Back in June, the band announced they were going to change the name of their group due to conversations they had with their “closest black friends.” The band changed the name of their group due to the term, “Antebellum,” which refers to a period of time that included slavery.
As followers of the band know, they announced they were going to switch to “Lady A” following the killing of George Floyd which sparked the Black Lives Matter protests around the country and in other parts of the world.
It became complicated quick, however, because Anita White had already been using “Lady A” for decades. The band has since filed a lawsuit to try and get rights to the name, claiming people have been calling them “Lady A” as a nickname ever since their career first started.
Country superstar, Luke Bryan, recently commented on the controversy during a conversation with Andy Cohen. Bryan says that for years, people referred to the band as “Lady A,” as a nickname, but he knows they definitely weren’t anticipating the backlash.

Bryan went on to say that changing their name to “Lady A,” was a great option at the time, however, now Anita White is defending what she has been using since the beginning of her career. “What a mess in the aftermath of removing ‘antebellum,'” Bryan remarked.
Country music fans know Lady Antebellum isn’t the only group to change their name. The Dixie Chicks also revealed they were going to drop “Dixie” from their name due to its allusion to the southern states that once belonged to the Confederacy during the Civil War.

During a chat with Stephen Colbert, The Chicks said they were about to change the name of their group, and they had wanted to do so for a while. The band claimed they had their “ducks in a row legally” before making the decision.
