Outlander Stars Sam Heughan and Sophie Skelton Break Down Their Bitterweet Reunion

May 2024 · 2 minute read

This week’s episode of Outlander finally gave fans what they have been waiting for:  Brianna’s reunion with her long-lost father, Jamie. Although Brianna (Sophie Skelton) and Jamie’s (Sam Heughan) meeting was one of the most anticipated scenes this season, it was more subdued than most fans had hoped – and for good reason.

In a new interview with TV Guide, Skelton talked about why her character’s reunion was so different and less emotional from what fans expected.

“I know that people want Brianna and her father to have this wonderful reunion but it’s very different,” Skelton shared. “They’re strangers… They’ve never met each other before.”

Skelton also characterized the meeting as “bittersweet” for Brianna, who is still dealing with recent traumatic events.

Before Brianna reunited with Jamie, this season’s new villain, Stephen Bonnet (Ed Speelers), sexually assaulted her. Brianna is also dealing with relationship issues after getting into a major fight with Roger (Richard Rankin), with whom she just tied the knot.

With so many things going on, Skelton admitted that Brianna was actually looking for comfort in her mother, Claire (Caitriona Balfe), not a reunion with a father she has never met.

While Brianna and Claire did reunite, her mom did little to quell the awkwardness that remained between her and Jamie. Even still, it is pretty obvious that Brianna takes after Jamie when it comes to her personality and temperament.

“She’s a Fraser,” Heughan shared, adding that Brianna is “stubborn.”

Brianna’s temper will likely create more problems once she learns that Jamie beat Roger half to death at the end of the episode. The fight happened after Jamie mistook Roger for Brianna’s rapist.

Jamie left Roger in the middle of nowhere after the encounter, which means Brianna will not be making up with him anytime soon. We can only hope the newlyweds can survive the drama and get their relationship back on track, but it does not look good.

It also complicates Brianna’s relationship with Jamie, which his not off to a great start.
