Montero was first linked with his back-up dancer Yai Ariza in 2021, around the time he had performed on SNL. Ariza became known for licking Montero’s neck during the performance. During the 2021 BET Awards, Montero and Ariza famously kissed each other onstage.

Soon, fans started speculating that Ariza and Montero were dating when the music video for “That’s What I Want” was released because in the video, they were shown to be getting intimate in what seemed to be a locker room.

In an interview with Sirius XM’s Hits 1 show, Lil Nas X talked more about his relationship with Ariza. He said that he was the “best person he had ever dated”, after a string of unfulfilling relationships with his other ex-boyfriends. Montero expressed that “he was still in love” with Ariza, however, they broke up a few months together to “focus on their careers and themselves”. This is the interview:
